It has been a few years since we entered any of the industry competitions, so we were completely blown away to discover that our recent entries had been awarded 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place in the Master Photographers Association Welsh region, Wedding Photojournalist category.

“Wedding Photojournalist” is a brand new category for 2011, and it’s really fantastic to see the MPA finally embracing this style of wedding photography. Over the last few years our approach has shifted rather heavily toward photojournalism (also known as reportage or documentary wedding photography), so it is a really great honour to have received the top 3 awards in this category.

For us, wedding photojournalism is certainly about being unobtrusive, but it is first and foremost about people and emotion. It’s about documenting relationships and feelings between friends and family. We can’t achieve this by being invisible, or by hiding out in the corner with a long lens. On the contrary it is possible, in fact necessary, to be unobtrusive yet still in the middle of the action. In the moment. We achieve this by being a part of the day. By being friendly, approachable and considerate we are able to connect with guests, gain their trust and be in the right position to capture the honest and genuine moments that happen throughout the wedding day. Of course, few weddings would be complete without a handful of family photographs and bride-and-groom portraits, and we certainly include these important elements in our coverage, but our focus is on documenting the day as it happens, without direction or interference. It’s about the real moments that tug on our heart strings and happen all around us throughout the day. This is what drives us to shoot in the style of wedding photojournalism.
